Mind the Gap #1
I’m starting a weekly newsletter called “Mind the Gap” to share interesting links, random thoughts, articles that I find during the week. I’ll drop in some updates about my life, work as well.
First, some life updates:
- I’ve recently relocated to London and settled down in a new flat.
- I’m working with AI Agents more and more and it’s been the most fun I have during my career so far.
AI will be a recurring theme in this newsletter for the forseeable future.
Here are some links for this week:
- Geohot - who I highly respect for his unconventional thoughts and wisdoms, dropped a hot take in a recent interview about breaking AI into 5 tiers (from electricity-tier 1 to completely worthless stuff like Cursor-tier 5). He thinks that all tier 5 will be eaten by the lower tiers and gave a compelling example of how Facebook absorbed Zynga. What an interesting guy, his podcast ep with Lex Fridman is a must-listen too.
- Andrej Karpathy: Software Is Changing (Again) - drop everything you’re doing and watch this. So much insights and thought provoking ideas. LLMs as utility and there might be an intelligence blackout in the future 🤯. Andrej also has the best course on LLMs out there too, check out Neural Networks: Zero to Hero
- Swift (the programming language, not the singer) is “a circle jerk of abstraction bullshit” - @mitchellh. As someone who write Swift for a living, sadly I have to agree. Swift has evolved from a beautiful simple language into a complex mess. SwiftUI, structured concurrency, actors, property wrappers, all of them are great ideas but half-baked. And don’t even get me started with Swift toolings.
- I’ve picked up the Glove80 keyboard. It’s quite a learning curve, here is my first typing test.
- “Show up with heartfelt intensity” is one of the The Browser Company (Arc, Dia)’s core values. I love this, fill your life/work with people who cares, and give a shit. Ignore the jaded, the cynical.
